Cynthia* came to Women’s Center-East in Dayton, Ohio afraid she had been exposed to Herpes. “Where can I go to get tested and not be treated like a number and not be judged?” she wondered. She had heard about Women’s Center-East from a friend who had her free pregnancy test and ultrasound there. “I know for sure I’m not pregnant, and I don’t feel differently, but I just have a sick feeling that my boyfriend hasn’t been honest with me. I saw some papers in his apartment about something medical, and I swear I saw the word ‘HERPES’ before he moved the papers out of my reach. My part time job doesn’t offer health insurance, so my options were limited. I was definitely stressed and didn’t want anyone to know about this.”
Cynthia went on, “coming to Women’s Center-East turned out to be a good decision for me. At my first visit I met with a Nurse-Consultant who walked me through what I could expect as far as which STDs I’d be tested for and some paperwork. She just listened while I told her about my boyfriend and why I wanted to get tested. We watched a short sexual health DVD that really helped me think about what kind of a relationship I wanted. It was awesome to be able to talk about my boyfriend with someone who didn’t know either of us, and the Nurse-Consultant gave me a lot of things to think about.”
Cynthia came back the following Monday to meet with the Nurse-Practitioner who performed the tests. She remembers, “I was a little nervous and anxious about how the testing would go since I had never had this done before. Both the Nurse-Consultant and the Nurse Practitioner were so nice. They took the time to explain what they would be doing throughout the entire process which really helped.” Since some of her results had to be sent to a lab, Cynthia was asked to come back in 2 weeks. “During my last visit,” said Cynthia, “I watched another DVD and then discussed my results with the Nurse Practitioner. She was very compassionate and gave me lots of helpful information. During these appointments, I was nervous and anxious but the women there were very professional and yet helped me feel cared about, comfortable and NOT judged.” It turned out to be a good experience in spite of a difficult situation.

Hi i was wondering if you had any appointments for this week or next week. To get checked for stds i got checked at the health department in augliaze and my boy friend wants to get get checked. He said he doesnt know if he has it or not but he wants to be safe. Thank You
