The Early Signs of Pregnancy

Could you be pregnant? It can be so hard to wait until a pregnancy test will be able to tell you (not until after you’ve missed your period), so many women look to the early signs of pregnancy for help in playing the waiting game.

While the early signs of pregnancy can sometimes be very similar to PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome), they can also sometimes help you to predict if there is a baby in your future or not. Early pregnancy signs like tender swollen breasts, abdominal bloating/tenderness, as well as fatigue are often associated with your period coming soon as well as potential predictors of pregnancy. However, if you really are pregnant, these symptoms can often be more pronounced than if it is simple PMS. But, you may also be surprised and have these symptoms just as you would right before your period (or not at all), but, your period never comes!

Some of the other early signs of pregnancy can be somewhat better indicators. Implantation bleeding, or the bleeding that sometimes results from the fertilized egg burrowing into the uterine lining, can sometimes happen 11 – 12 days after conception. This can be very close to the date of your missed period, however, it is a much lighter bleeding (more like spotting) and will last only for a day or two. While it can throw you off since it happens around the time of your period – for many women, implantation bleeding can be a fairly reliable sign of pregnancy.

Nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to odors can also be early signs of pregnancy. For most women, these symptoms don’t hit until after the first month of pregnancy, which would be after you missed your period. For some though, nausea and vomiting as well as sensitivity to odors can present earlier on in their pregnancy. And, for a few lucky others, they never feel nauseous or even the least bit queasy during their whole pregnancy!

Now, if you’ve been charting your fertility to aid or prevent pregnancy, you’ll likely have a much more reliable indicator of early pregnancy. Your basal body temperature (your temperature upon waking each morning) will stay elevated since the day after you ovulated if you are pregnant. If it has dipped back down to normal range, then you can expect your period soon. Charting is an excellent way to help you learn more about your body and your fertility. If you aren’t currently charting, you can start next month, if you aren’t pregnant now that is!

Of course the two most reliable signs of early pregnancy are a missed period and a positive pregnancy test. You’ve got to miss your period first before most pregnancy tests will yield accurate results. Usually about a week after you’ve missed your period you can take a pregnancy test and be able to trust the results. Of course after waiting all this time, it may be difficult to wait one more week. But, usually waiting is part of the game with pregnancy! Soon enough you’ll know without a doubt if you are pregnant or not.
